How to make a stand out profile on LinkedIn, Lime Connect's Community Platform, and beyond! 📝

If you’re a Lime Connect network member, you likely already know the value brought by online job platforms. They help you connect with like-minded peers, discover new opportunities, and potentially even find your next job. While our platform is designed to be your go-to resource for the professional needs of students and professionals with disabilities, there is great value for our members to also have a strong presence on platforms such as LinkedIn. That’s why we had Kennedy Vickerstaff, a recruiter at Microsoft, join us for a webinar on “How to Make Your LinkedIn Profile Stand Out.”

The Basics

Let's start with the building blocks of your professional profile. Make a solid first impression by nailing down the essentials and…

• Being accurate: Double-check your name, location, and work history to ensure they match your resume. Typos and inconsistencies can signal a lack of attention to detail.

• Putting your best face forward: You don’t necessarily need to hire a photographer, but be sure you’re using a professional headshot for your profile picture. Skip the sunglasses, silly poses, and distracting backgrounds.

• Showcasing your skills and certifications: Keep this section up-to-date, especially if you work in a field where new skills and technologies emerge rapidly. 

• 💚Lime Connect’s platform allows you to add a portfolio. Consider adding links to projects you’re proud of!

• Getting specific with recommendations: It’s really important to consider who you're asking for a recommendation. Go beyond just seeking general praise and instead consider asking someone to speak to the contributions you made on a specific project.

Elevate Your Profile

Once you have the basics in place, differentiate yourself by taking your profile to the next level. Remember, it's all about showcasing your unique value and passion.

• Add a Featured Spotlight Post: Use this prime real estate to showcase a recent accomplishment, award, or project that you're proud of. 

• Become a thought leader: Share articles, insights, or comments that demonstrate your expertise and passion for your field.

• Signal your availability: If you're actively seeking new opportunities, consider using the "Open to Work" banner to let recruiters know.

• Join professional groups: Engaging with professional groups relevant to your industry are a great way to expand your network and stay informed.

Reach Out Strategically

Now that your profile is in top shape, let's talk about how to connect with recruiters effectively. Remember, they're busy people, so in your communications be sure to…

• Be specific: When reaching out to a recruiter, mention the specific job title or ID you're interested in.

• Be professional: Keep your messages concise, polite, and avoid vague requests or inappropriate language.

• Be responsive: If a recruiter reaches out, reply promptly and provide your contact information. Remember, timing is important in the hiring process.

With a little effort, your LinkedIn profile can be a powerful tool throughout your job search.
